2 nurses won local awards and the hospital wants to send them flowers, 1 is a male. are flowers appropriate?

No.

You posted this question in Etiquette, so I would assume you would want an answer based upon centuries of tradition.

Sending flowers is traditionally something you do only for women. IE: Sending roses to your girl friend or giving flowers to a ballerina at the end of a ballet. Or for a funeral.

Flowers are a temporary and rather tacky (meaning simple and cheap) way of recognizing professional excellence.

It would be more appropriate for the hospital to send outstanding nurses something that is more fitting for their profession. IE: A nice engraved stethoscope or a desk set with their name on it recognizing the award. Or recognizing the award with a plaque in the lobby of the hospital for all to see. Something to remind them of their excellence and a reminder to keep up the good work.

YES. Men enjoy beauty equally.
Reply:I'm not sure about that, some men love flowers don't they. What about the idea of tokens from a main high street store, ie Boots, WHSmith etc.... or a book token they are also very useful that way they can choose what gift they like and still feel appreciated.
Reply:flowers are nice or u could send a small gift basket of treats addressed to both of them.

i sent my mom ta basekt of flower shapped cookies and she loved it! it could be for male or female go to www.bloomingcookies.com
Reply:No. I'd say a gift card and a pat on the back would be enough.
Reply:Flowers represent cheer and appreciation. Whether it's male or female the cheer and appreciation is there, so flowers are still appropriate for either sex. But, in this situation I would have to say that I don't think flowers would be an appropriate reward for a male nurse, but if that's the choice of whoever is presenting, then so be it.
Reply:I am a Male, and would not be offended. Eveybody can enjoy flowers.
Reply:Most florists will make fruit baskets or cheese/cracker baskets for a similar price to the flowers...check around!
Reply:They are, but the baskets are nicer for guys. They seem to appreciate them more. You could send the lady a fruit basket as well, so they gifts are similar. Or, the snack baskets. A nice bottle of liquor or wine for they guy and flowers for the lady would go over well. Flowers are always appropriate, of course, it just seems from my experience that they like the baskets better. Most florists offer something like this now.
Reply:Whether in a professional or personal vein, flowers and cards are never appropriate for guys. Flowers die and and unless they have money in them, cards are useless. Send beer and tools. A bouquet of open-end/boxed-end wrenches lets me know I'm loved.
Reply:yes it is appropriate and I am not gay. I like if someone give me flowers it gives happiness in my life
Reply:You can but why not send one of those gift baskets with food in it instead.
Reply:Yes, nothing wrong with sending award winners of either gender flowers....Being consistent is the most important thing as gender shouldn't ever play a factor in professional settings and gifts. Certain gifts should not be given in professional settings to either gender.
